The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024) is an English-language animated fantasy adventure set in the legendary world of Middle-earth. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, the film takes place 183 years before the events of the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy and tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan.
The story begins when Wulf, a powerful Dunlending lord seeking revenge for the death of his father, launches a sudden attack against Helm and the people of Rohan. Faced with a powerful enemy and an increasingly desperate situation, Helm and his followers retreat to the ancient fortress of the Hornburg, which later becomes known as Helm’s Deep.
As the conflict intensifies, Héra, Helm’s daughter, finds herself in a position where she must summon her courage and help lead the resistance. Her journey becomes an important part of the story as she faces difficult choices, danger, and the responsibility of protecting her people. The movie combines large-scale battles and adventure with a strong focus on courage, family, loyalty, and leadership.
The film also connects with the wider Lord of the Rings mythology while telling a largely standalone story. Miranda Otto returns as the voice of Éowyn and serves as the narrator, while Brian Cox voices Helm Hammerhand, Gaia Wise voices Héra, and Luke Pasqualino voices Wulf.
